In PSP 7, open the graphic you want to lighten or fade.
Work with a copy of it so you can keep the original intact.
To make a copy, click on "Window / Duplicate".
Get rid of the original and work with the duplicate.
Now click "Layers / Promote to Layer".
If that's grayed out, then it's already a layer so you are all set.
Now click on the layer palette and highlight the graphic.
If you don't know what the layer palette is, CLICK HERE for an explanation.
To the right side on the layer palette, where it says 100, slide the bar to less to fade it.
