This tut is for making custom frames that can look like this, for example.
Start with a template. Or you can just create a square.
But for those who work with templates a lot, this is how to make frames within, say, a recipe card.
Go to the template layer and promote it to a layer by clicking on "Layers / Promote to Layer".
If it's grayed out, it is already a layer.
Either that, or it's a gif that you have to make a jpg first.
Do that by clicking on "Colors / Increase Color Depth /
16 Million Colors (24 bit).
Now click the magic wand within the square.
But make sure feather is set to zero, and that Sample Merged is NOT selected.
However, if what you want to fill is not a square, set the feather to 1.
Now click on "Selections / Modify / Expand".
I expand the selection by 1. However, you may need more at times.
Just zoom in and see how close the marching ants are to the template lines.
If you don't do the modify / expand, you will get a tiny little gap.
Now click on "Layers / New Raster Layer" and OK the box.
It's best that each fill goes on it's own layer so that if you change your mind later and want something else, you can delete it.
Now flood fill the entire area with your color or background fill.
Now click on "Selections / Modify / Contract".
Now how much you contract depends on how big you want your frame, so practice to see how big you want it.
Here is what it will look like at this point.
After you choose what you want, press delete on your keyboard and your are left with a nice border like this.
Now click on "Selections / Select None".
Now you apply an inner bevel to it if you want to.
If you want to apply another frame to it so there are more layers, use the magic wand again, and select inside the square, but you don't need to be on the template layer this time. But DO click on "Layers / New Raster Layer" so whatever fill you choose is on it's own layer again.
Now just repeat as above and you are all set.
Except if you don't deselect in between frames, you won't need to do the Selections / Modify / Expand again.
My frame has several layers. The skinny butterscotch ones are a contract of 3. The thinner gingham frame is a contract of 20. And the wider gingham frame is a contract of 40. Then I just filled the middle with a background fill.
